An unfinished work in oil based on the advertising poster for the film from Richard Matheson’s entertaining novel. The film starred Roddy McDowall, Gayle Hunnicutt, Clive Revill, and Pamela Franklin. I’d finished portraits of the leads save for Pamela Franklin. Then as happens I became obsessed with something else, and just never returned to complete this. But it seems like the right piece of artwork for the holiday, so here it is. -GF
Once upon a time (that time being around 1980), a magazine in south Florida called Easy Times hired me to paint a cover for an issue that focused on a small group of hot young comedians. And so “The Comedians,” as I named it, was born. In this blast-from-the-past, see how many of them you can identify. If you get them all, you’re probably as ancient as I am.

Sherman’s set the Wayback Machine for the 1960s, when I gravitated into art school, only to suffer–in my second year–a catastrophic apartment fire that wiped out 100% of the charcoal drawings and oil paintings I’d done in those two years (but not, amazingly, my first attempt at a short story, written for a night class I was taking). It’s only recently that I’ve started looking back at some of that illustration work (most of what I drew or painted fits that category). So I’m thinking maybe I’ll post a few of the survivors just for shits and giggles, starting with this Disney Fantasia-inspired technical pen rendition of Chernobog…because I always go for the light subjects.
